CBD has became big, big business over the last five years. But some of the very best products come from smaller CBD boutique-style shops where knowledgeable and passionate staff.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a naturally occurring compound found in hemp and the resinous flower of cannabis. It is safe, non-addictive, and has many health benefits. CBD works on the endocannabinoid system in your body. This complex system contributes to homeostasis—or maintaining balance— through a complex network of signaling substances. In this article, we’ll discuss the top CBD retailers in the Southwest.
What Does CBD Help With?
There are many potential uses for CBD, although not all have been well-studied. And because the substance is not FDA-approved, it is against the law to make medical claims about it. But we can tell you what many users report about its possible benefits:
- Lowering tobacco cravings
- Pain relief
- Sleep aid
- Anxiety relief
- Reduction of depression
- Neuroprotective properties
- Mood increase
- Stress reduction
- Antioxidant
- Fibromyalgia relief
- Nausea relief
- Anti-inflammatory
- Acne reduction
- Headache relief
- Digestive aid
- Muscle relaxation
- Hearth health
- Immune system boost
What About Other Cannabinoids?
There are over 120 cannabinoids found in hemp, and while a few of them have been heavily researched, scientists still don’t understand most of them. However, there are some exceptions. In addition to CBD, you may have seen several other cannabinoids commonly marketed along with this compound. Many products combine CBD with CBG, THC, and CBN for added effects.
CBG
CBG (cannabigerol) is often referred to as “the mother of all of the cannabinoids.” But, like CBD, it has no intoxicating effect, and you won’t get high from it. Plants produce CBG first, which is then converted into the other cannabinoids.
THC
Cannabis primarily comprises the crystalline active ingredient known as THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol). It is the cannabinoid responsible for the “high” and psychoactive effects. While many products sold today have both THC and CBD, the CBD products on our list are all THC-free.
CBN
When THC is oxidized outside, it forms CBN (cannabinol). This cannabinoid is mildly intoxicating and is not yet known to have as many health benefits as the other marketed cannabinoids. However, users report CBN to have more sedating effects than CBD or THC, making it a potentially helpful compound for sleep.
Is CBD Legal in the Southwest?
While medical and recreational cannabis use is legal in Arizona and New Mexico, it is not in Texas and Oklahoma. So what about the legality of CBD? Much of the CBD on the market today is sourced from commercially-cultivated hemp plants, and thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill, CBD is legal in all states across America.
The Farm Bill states that industrial hemp-derived CBD may be sold, purchased, and used recreationally, provided it contains no more than 0.03 percent THC. However, the legality of marijuana is critical to know because THC-legal states offer CBD products derived from both marijuana and industrial hemp, so it is common for products to contain different combinations of CBD and THC levels.
Here is a brief overview of the marijuana and hemp laws in the Southwest:
- Arizona: Medical and recreational marijuana use has been legal for those at least 21 years of age since 2010.
- New Mexico: Medical and recreational marijuana use has been legal for those at least 21 years of age since 2021.
- Texas: According to the advocacy group NORML, Texas is a “medical CBD state.” Medical marijuana use is limited to cannabis containing less than .5% THC, and smoking is illegal. Recreational marijuana use is illegal.
- Oklahoma: Medical marijuana usage for those at least 18 years of age and cultivation for personal use has been legal since 2018. Recreational use is illegal.
The Best CBD Stores in the Southwest: Our Methodology
There are hundreds of dispensaries, cannabis shops, and CBD retailers in the PNW, so narrowing them down to just 30 was a challenge. First, we analyzed all the top-rate CBD stores in all four states. Then, we narrowed them down according to popularity, selection, location, and level of service.
However, we haven’t ranked these shops in any particular order. Instead, they are categorized by state to make it straightforward for our readers to find CBD in a specific region. Notably, if you can’t make the trip out West, you can bring CBD from the PNW to you. A vast majority of these shops (especially those that carry their own formulations) have online stores and will ship all over the country.
Where Can I Buy CBD in the Southwest?
Whether you are new to CBD and would like to try it or already enjoy its benefits, the question will always remain, “Where can I buy CBD, and how do I know it is good quality”? We have made that quest easier with our list of the 30 Best CBD Shops in The Southwest. We’ve included the best CBD shops in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma.

A Note on Kratom
You surely noticed that a few shops on our list also specialize in kratom products. Like cannabis, kratom is not legal for human consumption in some states. We verified that the shops on our list selling kratom are doing so by their state laws. But what is kratom?
Kratom (pronounced “Kray-tom” or cra-tum”) is made from the leaves of Mitragayna Specisoa trees native to Southeast Asia. These leaves are harvested and ground to a fine powder. The main effects of kratom are thought to be opioid-like and can be stimulating in lower doses and sedating in higher doses. It is commonly used for pain relief, mood boost, anxiety relief, and to help with recovery from opiate addiction.
Kratom has been marketed in the United States for only a short time and is under scrutiny from the FDA. However, the continuing science on Mitragayna Speciosa shows it to be safer than opiates with no concern for respiratory failure or overdose. Used carefully, kratom can be an excellent tool (like CBD) for many health issues.
Final Thoughts
No matter where you decide to get your CBD, there are a few things to keep in mind while you’re shopping.
Source
Like most consumables, an item’s quality can vary from vendor to vendor. Hemp is a bioaccumulator, which means it draws chemicals out of the soil in which it is grown. If the hemp is planted in clean, mineral-rich soil without the use of pesticides, you’ll end up with safe, excellent-quality CBD. But if it has been grown in contaminated or polluted soil, the end product can be filled with things you don’t want in your body. Always ask where the hemp has been sourced before purchasing any CBD product.
Extraction Method
Another critical factor in the quality of CBD is the extraction method. Cheap, mass-produced CBD oil is often extracted using toxic chemicals that leach into the end product. Find out how your CBD has been extracted. Most reputable retailers carry CBD that has been extracted using supercritical CO2, olive oil, or food-grade alcohol.
Third-Party Lab Reports
Some vendors will also provide COAs (certificates of analysis) for the products they carry. Also called third-party lab reports, these documents reveal what is in the CBD you are considering. However, not surprisingly, many vendors do not have them. So, again, don’t be afraid to ask questions about your purchase, and be sure to request a lab sheet. If the vendor refuses, take your business elsewhere, as plenty of other CBD businesses will be happy to comply.
